How long have you worked in IPS?

18 Months

Why did you want to become an IPS Employment Specialist?

Heard about it from a friend and ex-colleague who was already in the role. I was looking for a new job and it appeared to be a role that would enable me to use some of my existing skills and enthusiasms in a positive way.

What were you doing before this?

I had been an advocate for 14 years, working in IMCA (for people lacking mental capacity around best interests decisions) and latterly also in Mental Health advocacy. Prior to this I worked in residential mental health settings for some 14 years, latterly managing settings and services.

What skills have you gained working in IPS, and have you used any prior transferrable skills in this role?

I have gained an insight into the workings of the job market as they have an impact on people who have experienced mental health challenges.

I have used existing listening skills and communications skills.

What’s the best bit about your job?

Feeling that I am providing needed support to people.

What piece of advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for a job as an IPS Employment Specialist?

Do it! It’s a good type of work to be involved in, and colleagues are a nice and supportive group of people.
