James’ IPS Journey
How long have you worked in IPS?
6 months.
What drew you to a role in IPS?
I have worked within people centric roles for many years. A few years ago Norfolk & Waveney Mind visited where I was working; the presentation really inspired me to what I could do to use my skills in helping others. From that day I took a keen interest in the Service until I saw the role advertised! I enjoy using my recruitment and business skills in helping others.
What were you doing before you started work in IPS?
I used to work in Commercial Banking for several years before changing my career direction to recruitment around 10 years ago. Within this time, I have worked both agency and in-house recruitment for organisations based across the UK.
What’s the best bit about your day?
Simple…..the people I meet every day. I meet so many people from all walks of like. People which I may not meet in my personal life. I think this is real privilege and I enjoy this aspect very much.
Have there been any standout moments for you while on the job?
One of the first clients I met was extremely anxious and worried about meeting me. They had been previously looked after by an existing ES for a long time. Over several meetings we started to build rapport and trust. Within our appointments I would always meet the client outside the venue and we would walk in together. On one appointment I arrived early and found a suitable seat, I turned around to see the client had walked in, beaming smile and hand shake to the ready! We had reached a big milestone for the client in terms of new people, walking in public places and trust.
You’ve supported countless service users on their journeys. What sort of skills have you gained while working in IPS?
Patience! This is the biggest skill I have learnt. I am used to working in fast paced, pressured environments. Within my current role I have gained the skills of patience and, to a certain extent, we work at the pace of the client. The training provided by the Service when I joined was superb and provided me with so many skills and tools for my role.
Finally – what piece of advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for a job as an IPS Employment Specialist?
If you’re thinking about it – do it! I do not have a background in health at all but this was not needed. I have enjoyed learning new skills but knew I would success with my people and recruitment skills. If you enjoy meeting and helping people, being an active part of your community and enjoy working towards various outcomes definitely apply! The last 6 months for me personally have flown round.
