Kasia’s IPS Journey
How long have you been working in IPS?
12 months.
What drew you to a role in IPS?
I am passionate about helping and supporting people. I know from life experience that everyone deserves a chance and a change in life for the better. And I know that such help and support is often invaluable.
What were you doing before you started work in IPS?
I have an academic background in Business, Management, and Health and Social Care. I also have work experience as a physiotherapist, cleaner, and in the education, HR, care, hospitality and retail sector. Besides this, I was also a volunteer at Macmillan Cancer Support.
Wow! You have such varied experiences. Were there any transferable skills from your background that you applied to your work in IPS?
I learned how to provide support with housing and benefits applications. My HR background also helped with supporting those with mental health conditions. I am also multilingual – Polish is my native language.
After joining this role, what was your first week like on the job?
I felt enthusiasm and excitement, but at the same time, I was worried about whether I would be able to establish clear communication with clients and employers because English is not my first language. I was also wondering if I had enough experience to support my clients.
12 months in, what’s the best bit about your day?
Meeting clients with different backgrounds and supporting them with complex needs. Also, having opportunities to build relationships of trust and friendship with them. Building communication and contacts with local employers is also something I enjoy.
That’s lovely. Have there been any standout moments for you while on the job?
My client had never worked, and made her first CV ever. After 5 weeks of very intense job searching, she got a job and is still working there!
What sort of skills have you gained while working in IPS?
Every day I learn new things and gain information that is invaluable in my work, like CV skills, employment, benefits, and communication. I have gained self-confidence, improve my English every day, and can communicate with people from different backgrounds.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who is considering applying for a job as an IPS Employment Specialist?
This work can be challenging, but the greatest reward is seeing the client’s joy and gratitude because their life has radically changed for the better. No two days are the same!
