Martin’s Story
Martin is in his 60s and, like many people, has carried the weight of a difficult early life and ongoing mental health challenges. Over the years, this affected his confidence and made it harder for him to find meaningful work. But Martin hadn’t given up. He wanted to return to employment, not just for an income, but for the sense of routine, purpose and physical activity he knew would help him feel better in himself.
When Martin was referred to the IPS Service, he met Dan, his Employment Specialist. In their first sessions, Dan noticed that Martin found it hard to make eye contact and often doubted himself. Still, Martin was clear about what mattered to him. He wanted a job that would keep him active, allow him to work independently, and limit close interaction with others so he could feel comfortable and confident.
With this in mind, Dan suggested a cleaning role that took place outside normal office hours. The work involved cleaning office buildings for a small number of hours each week – just the right balance of structure, movement and independence. It immediately resonated with Martin. It felt like something that truly fit who he was and what he needed.
Dan worked alongside Martin every step of the way, helping him learn how to use a laptop to search for jobs, updating his CV, and getting ready for interviews. Before long, Martin secured the role, a moment that marked a real turning point. Since starting work, he says he feels more motivated, more confident, and more hopeful about the future.
Looking back, Dan has seen a huge change in Martin. He now communicates more easily, engages in conversations with confidence, and has built a strong, trusting relationship with his Employment Specialist. Alongside work, Dan also supported Martin to join a gym, helping him continue to build a healthier, more active lifestyle.
For Martin, this journey hasn’t just been about finding a job – it’s been about rediscovering his confidence, his independence, and a renewed sense of purpose.
